Did You Know…

  1. Veterans Day falls on November 11th each year and is a state and federal holiday in the United States honoring all who have served in the United States military.

  2. Distinguishing Veterans Day and Memorial Day —

  3. Many people often confuse the two holidays, however Memorial Day honors those who died while serving in the military, and Veterans Day honors all those who have served in the United States military, whether alive or deceased.

  4. Veterans Day especially gives thanks to living veterans who served our country honorably during war or peacetime.

  5. November 11th marks the day that the major combat in World War I ended. The war formally ended on November 11th at the 11th November is also the 11th month of the year.

  6. The holiday originated as “Armistice Day” in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson, but legally became Veterans Day in 1954.

  7. The idea to honor all veterans on November 11 and not just those who served and lost their lives in World War I originated from Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran from Alabama.

  8. There are 18.5 million veterans in the United States, according to the most recent statistics available. 1.6 million are female veterans and 9.2 million veterans are over the age of 65.

  9. Each year on Veterans Day there is a ceremony held in Arlington Cemetery to honor all who have died in war.

  10. In 1992, DNA tests revealed the identity of “the unknown soldier” from the Vietnam War who was reburied in Arlington National Cemetery. His name was Michael Blassie, a 24-year-old pilot shot down in 1972 on the border of Cambodia.

  11. On Veterans Day there are many parades and events held across the country. Come out and support or Veterans at the Ace Café on November 11th from 10am-6pm for a fun filled day of cars, food, parades and vendors!
