Stacked vs. Unstacked Uninsured Motorist Coverage

What is the difference between stacked and unstacked Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage? You’ve probably heard both terms before and maybe even had to choose between the two. The basic difference is that stacking insurance combines or increases coverage limits for more than one vehicle, which essentially increases the coverage you have in the event of an accident. Stacked insurance can also be stacked within a single policy or stacked across multiple policies.

Stacked Insurance Coverage Within a Single Policy If you have more than one vehicle insured on the same policy, you may be able to stack the coverages for the individual vehicles into one combined coverage. For example, if one vehicle has a UM coverage limit of $25,000 and another vehicle on the same policy has the same coverage limit, the combined stacked total would be up to $50,000 if one of those vehicles is involved in an accident with an uninsured driver.

Stacked Insurance Coverage Across Multiple Policies You may have more than one vehicle insured with separate policies from the same insurance provider. If this is the case, you may be able to stack your UM coverages across the policies to one combined coverage. For example, if one of your vehicles has UM coverage up to $30,000 on one policy and another has the same coverage limit on a different policy, these may combine to raise the limit to $60,000 despite being coverages from separate policies.

Stacked UM Coverage will also pay if you’ve been injured on a motorcycle covered under a different policy or a motorcycle you own but do not have insurance on.

Unstacked Insurance Coverage Unstacked coverage makes the most sense for those who only have one vehicle to insure, since there are no coverages to “stack” or combine. Whatever the UM coverage limit for your vehicle, that’s how much you can expect to be covered in an accident with an uninsured driver.

If you have more than one vehicle to insure, it’s important to understand these types of coverage and ensure that your limits are enough to cover the possible damage caused to you in the event of an accident with an uninsured driver. It’s also important to note that not all providers may offer the option of stacking insurance and where you live may have an effect on your options as well.
