Independence Day Safety Tips

July 4th is almost here and Americans all across the United States will likely be gathering to view the holiday’s most anticipated entertainment: fireworks. While fireworks are a lot of fun, both to set off and to watch, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Here are a few tips to help protect you and your loved ones this Independence Day:

  1. Keep a safe distance. If you’re planning to set off fireworks, do so with extreme caution, lighting only one at a time and keeping a bucket of water close at hand.

  2. Wear safety gear. Fireworks burn at intense temperatures, so it’s imperative to ensure that your eyes, skin and face are protected from potentially serious burns.

  3. Always make sure an adult is in charge. Sparklers and ground fireworks may seem harmless enough but children should never be given fireworks and should always be supervised by an adult.

  4. Dunk it to be safe. Dud fireworks should be dunked in water to ensure that they won’t unexpectedly go off.

  5. Keep pets safe. Our beloved companions may become frightened by, run from or even chew on fireworks. Make sure your pets are in a safe place when lighting all fireworks.

  6. Check up on Florida’s fireworks laws. Each state has its own legislation governing fireworks. Fireworks violations could result in a fine and, in some cases, even jail time. Protect yourself and others by ensuring that the fireworks you set off don’t cause damage to others or their property.

  7. Never buy suspicious fireworks. Always make sure you’re buying fireworks from a trusted source. Don’t purchase any fireworks that seem suspicious or homemade.

  8. Visit a professional show. There are plenty of awesome professional fireworks display all across Central Florida. The shows are put on by professionals and there are usually law enforcement officers and emergency medical services available nearby.

Above all, take common sense safety precautions when handling or lighting fireworks this July 4th. We wish all an exciting and safe Independence Day celebration.
